Original Site (1996-1998)
In the middle of 1996, after playing Doom and Quake online and meeting a lot of cool people on
other Quake servers, Gad and Bumzy started to look into what it would take to run their own.
Bumzy got a job working for an ISP and obtained access to dedicated Internet and Gad started
development of the first web site in the Fall. At the time of the first deployment
all of the ES members were local friends and family but that would quickly expand.
First Major Overhaul (1998-2002)
After deploying the first Linux based Quake Evil Smurfs Lair server the clan started to grow very quickly.
GaD redesigned the web site with all new graphics and added information about matches with other clans and an
embedded web form to challenge us. At this stage we had also moved to playing Quake2 and QuakeWorld with a heavy emphasis on Capture the Flag.
Second Major Overhaul (2002-2003)
With the release of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Battlefield 1942, Rainbow Six: Black Thorn, and Ghost Recon,
the clan was growing and the web site needed another face lift. We added phpBB forums, a photo gallery, a polling module,
and a web-based IRC client to support the growing community.
Third Major Overhaul (2003-2004)
This was the third and final major update to the site. Everyone loved RTCW and the Evil Smurfs Lair dedicated Tram server caused
an explosion of interest in our clan. We added game-server monitors and quarterly stats to the site along with a web mail service for
our members. At this time the vwar system was also added to manage the clan calendar, matches, and a bunch of other functions.
Hosting Change & Minor Updates (2004)
In March 2004 the web site was defaced and the forums were hacked.
In April Gad started hosting a backup copy of the site with a brand-new forum database.
We were able to obtain a backup of this DB but it only covers a few months and does not include the main page news or photo gallery data. The static web content was current as of September 2004.
If you have any info on a more complete DB backup please let us know.
Final updates made by Garrett (2004-2009)
**It is our goal to recreate a snapshot of the site as it appeared in July 2008, shortly after GaD's passing.
Based on data captured by the Internet Time Machine, sometime between July and December 2008 the news went offline and some of the image links were broken.
Then, in December 2009, the web site went offline with no notice. EvilSmurfs2.com was used as an alternate address to get the word out.
Various hosts after GaD passed (2009-2021)
**It is our goal to recreate a snapshot of the site as it appeared in January 2016 before it went dark.
After the fallout of 2009 the web site seemed to go online sporadicaly but most of the links just pointed to forum topics.
Sometime after March of 2016 the website went down for good. It looks like the hosting provider changed a couple times but a new site was never launched.
In September 2021 the original domain registration expired and from 2021 to 2023 the EvilSmurfs.com domain was owned by a non-affiliated entity.
Tribute Site (2022-2025)
In 2022 we started EvilSmurfs.org in order to preserve the history of the clan and its past websites, forums, etc.
In March 2023 we were able to recover EvilSmurfs.com at auction and linked it to these archives.
Although never owned or used by our clan in the past, we acquired EvilSmurfs.net in 2024 and linked it to these archives as well.
In July 2025 copyright complaints forced us to remove our archives. As a result, access is now restricted to former members and dedicated fans who inquire about the current credentials via Discord. For those interested in exploring our history, we encourage you to visit archive.org, where you can find snapshots of our site as it appeared during the early 2000s. Thank you for your understanding and continued support!
